Colorful Reno

There was a lot of color in Reno, perhaps its all that desert.  Twice we went to breakfast in downtown at the Blue Bean.  They serve their sandwiches on Truckee sourdough bread or fresh bagels, and have fresh donuts too.  The owners are from South Africa and settled here after deciding Portland was too gloomy after living in London for 12 years.

They had live music on Sunday morning, and we enjoyed their colorful art display as well.

Every time I visit a new state I check Wikipedia's list of Peter Toth's Whispering Giants.  Reno is home to Nevada's wood carving donated by Peter Toth, so of course I had to drive over to Idlewild Park and check it out.

Wa-Pai-Shone is a tribute to the Washoe, Paiute, and Shoshone of Nevada and the 17 foot wooden statue was given to the state in 1986.  He had a little more color than the other Whispering Giants I've seen.

But the real color explosion is in the neon, of course.  You'll recognize this landmark image, I'm sure.

I was digging the reflections at the El Dorado.

And apparently, according to the sign, Reno art kicks ass.  Having been to their art museum, not to mention seeing their murals and local art displayed everywhere I would have to agree!

  1. Thanks for the introduction to those Whispering Giants.
I love neon signs and would relish a trip to Reno and Vegas if only to see as many of them as possible!
