A Little Fog on a Windless Day

It happened a little early this year.  The kind of weather that lasts for weeks and throws me into a cookie-eating-lethargy that includes neglecting blogging, long naps, and too much TV.  Southern Wisconsin has been beset by cold, wind, and snow all well before Thanksgiving.

But, the last couple of days have been better with highs in the 30's and 40's, no snow and little wind.  By Thursday it's going to be ridiculously cold again and it probably will be here to stay.  So today I went for a hike at Volo Bog even though it was foggy.  Compared to the weather we've been having a little fog on a windless day was a treat that couldn't be passed up.

Maybe the above picture doesn't look too appealing, but it's all in the details and I made the effort to take that closer look to find the pictures that are worth taking.

Not too shabby, huh?

My car was the only one in the parking lot and I had the bog all to myself.  Even the geese and cranes have flown the coop and the wind was quiet for a change.  An occasional bird chirped or flitted away in the trees, but otherwise I got to poke around the bog in almost complete silence.  I like hiking with others, but hiking alone with no place to rush off to is really the best.

When I was about to head back to the parking lot I decided to take a spur I'd never explored before and found a whole new trail area.  I'll tell you about it tomorrow!

  1. Your hike looks like what I would enjoy. I'd love to be able to photograph Pitcher Plants. You have them in Wisconsin? How do they survive the cold? I tried growing some here in a greenhouse. They lasted awhile but not forever.

  2. Nice macro shots especially of the red berries. I always like to get outside, even if the weather is not so great. I'm always glad I did.
