Baileys Harbor Mural

I knew we picked the right town to stay in for our trip to Door County when I saw that Baileys Harbor had a mural.

It has elements of the area's past and present woven in, like the Lower and Upper Range Lights I posted about the other day. Between the range lights and hardware store is a lumber mill off in the distance.

Brann Bros. was the name of the general store that stood where the hardware store the mural is on stands today.  Cana Island Light is back a bit in the landscape...we'll visit there soon.

I really like the smiling kayaker and the lady with the fawn though.  The folks are supposedly people we might "recognize", so maybe the lady in the red kerchief is Lorine Niedecker.  There is also a Native American woman on the shore, glad they included her.

Why do I think the lady might be Lorine Niedecker?  I found a hidden poem in the corner, and further research indicates it was written by the Wisconsin poet.  That makes this the second mural I've found in Wisconsin highlighting her poetry! The poem is titled "Wintergreen Ridge" and was inspired by her visit in the 1960's to The Ridges.

The mural was painted by local artist Ram Rojas.  Linking up to Monday Mural.

  3. What a great find in a tiny town. Don't you love it when that happens? Lots to see in this one and it seems you've developed quite a skill on observing the nuances of a mural scene. Don't think I would have found the poem. Thanks for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.
