Simmons Island Sights

Southport Light isn't the only thing to see in the Simmons Island area on Kenosha's lakefront. The North Pier Light is a short walk away, and we got a pretty good look at it as we walked back to our parking space.  We also saw a U.S. Coast Guard boat, and were "buzzed" by a couple of good looking biplanes which passed over a few times and then turned west toward the Kenosha airport.

The lakefront is home to a nice sandy beach with plenty of paved paths for biking or walking and the paved path extends all the way to Carthage College from Simmons Island.  If you like hanging out near the lakefront at night the Kenosha Pops performs at the bandshell on Wednesday nights.  Bring a blanket and listen to everything from Bach to the Beatles, we did it once with the kids and it was clean family fun.

Just over the bridge is Old Downtown, where new businesses are starting to bring the rundown area back to life.  Each time I've been in the area I've eyed this great neon sign over The Coffee Pot restaurant and I finally had my camera along with me to get a shot of it!

While waiting to meet my mother for lunch at The Boat House we wandered into a resale shop that had a lot of wooden boats for sale.  The one below was $1500, so I took a picture home instead of the boat itself.

We used to live about 10 blocks from The Boat House when the kids were little, and I used to go there with Wayne and his friends from work for their great selection of Long Island Ice Tea type drinks. If you're a lightweight like me, one 32 ounce mug is all it takes for you to need a designated driver!  Katrina ordered the   Mango Madness, and then got cozy with "The Captain".  Grandma and I stuck with ice water since we had driving to do!

Before lunch we checked out the Civil War Museum across the breakwater, which was new to us since we moved from Kenosha 17 years ago.  I'll talk about that in the next post.

Katrina was surprised at all the fun little things there were along the lake since usually when we go to K-Town it's just to run errands out at the western edge of town.  Now that I'm not going to be as handicapped as I thought this month perhaps we'll have to do some more exploring before she leaves the area when she finally gets a job offer.  She's had a few interviews in the past month, but no offers yet.  The last interview was a few days ago for a job in Boston, or as she called it "the Dream".  Think of all the seaside exploring we could do there!
