Sioux Quartzite is a popular building material in this area on the Minnesota-South Dakota border. When I first saw it in downtown Luverne I told Wayne it made me think of The Flintstones.

The quartzite was formed from river deposits when much of North America was under sea level, and it varies in color from pink to red. Most of what we saw was downright purple, in my opinion. I won't talk about it any more right now because we're going to be heading over to Pipestone National Monument and I'm sure I'll need to say more about it then! I have lots to talk about in upcoming posts, so much I don't even know where to start.

Yep - I miss the red rocks you see in the midwest. Nothing but black volcanic rocks out here.
ReplyDeleteOnly thing that spoils the photo of the building is the later addition on the right hand side. Courthouse looks impressive
ReplyDeleteThe other building is not an addition, out here the buildings are just smack up against each other in these old downtown areas. As you pointed out, sometimes it really spoils the look of some of them.
